Kinesio taping

Kinesio taping is a complementary method that uses special elastic adhesive tapes applied to the skin with different methods and tensions depending on the goal of the treatment. The tape can be used within a pathway of medical massage, rehabilitation and management of musculoskeletal conditions, as a support to manual techniques and other therapies.

Kinesio taping application

How it works

The tape is applied directly to the skin. Depending on the technique, the application can aim to provide a mechanical and sensory stimulus to the skin and superficial tissues, influencing the perception of movement and of the treated area.

It can be used to support:

  • Modulating pain perception
  • Promoting awareness of the treated area
  • Accompanying movement
  • Supporting some muscle and joint conditions
  • Integrating manual treatment
  • Maintaining a therapeutic stimulus even between sessions

What to expect

The application is generally quick and painless. Once applied, the tape can stay on the skin for a certain period.

You may feel:

  • A slight tension
  • Greater awareness of the treated area

How long it stays on depends on the area, the type of tape, the condition of the skin and individual needs: it can generally remain applied for a few days as long as the skin stays in good condition.

Benefits

Depending on the technique and the condition, it can help to:

  • Modulate pain perception
  • Improve awareness of the affected area
  • Provide sensory support during movement
  • Accompany functional recovery
  • Support some musculoskeletal conditions
  • Prolong some of the treatment’s stimuli between sessions

Indications

  • Muscle tension
  • Overload
  • Some joint conditions
  • Sports-related conditions
  • Functional limb conditions
  • Some painful musculoskeletal conditions

Professional approach

The choice of technique considers the area, the symptoms, mobility and function, sports or work activity, skin characteristics and the goal of the treatment.

  • Sport → it can be applied before or during training or competition as a complementary support; it does not replace recovery, physical preparation or the treatment of an injury
  • Integration with other methods → it can be combined with medical massage, sports massage, manual lymphatic drainage or other methods when it is a useful support in the pathway

Cautions: particular care is needed in the presence of wounds, irritation, dermatitis, skin reactions, known allergies to adhesives or skin infections.
